Momma just chased them off with a broom

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Got finished grilling some chicken tonight and I found this sucker wanting a piece. So being the geek I am, I put Reese inside, and took some photos to put on my blog. Yippee! Anyways, he let me get pretty close so I got some decent shots. But I am just putting one up, because I have a feeling this is not nearly as cool as I think it is. He does look mean though.

Who sends Spam?

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

I have been fighting with spammers alot at work lately. People really have taken to exploiting web forms which send emails. I thought it would be good to explore this topic a little, since everyone gets spam and everyone hates it. But first lets settle some facts that I will not be explaining.

  1. Many forms on the internet use email as a method of transport of the information you input
  2. These forms can be exploited to send emails to whomever you would like, or a bunch of whomevers you would like
  3. A program can run that repeatedly sends emails through said form or many different forms

Why would someone do this instead of just sending emails from whatever computer they are running from? The answer is simple, if AOL is receiving thousands of spam emails from a certain computer, it is not too long before they quit blocking your emails. So, you have to send them from other people’s computers (such as the server the website is running from).

So what is keeping people from blocking a certain computer from exploiting their web form? Spammers don’t use their own computers to run webform exploitation software, they get people like you to send it for them. Anytime, you go to a suspicious website or install free or trial software you could be opening yourself up to becoming a spammer. If you are infected, these programs running on your machine will talk to spammers’ machines (the mothership) and ask it what to send and how to send it. So at any given moment there are millions of personal computers sending unsolicited emails to millions of email addresses. So, who is sending all this spam? It could be you!

New Truck

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Kristin and I went and bought a new truck on Friday. It is a 2005 Tundra w/ 5,000 miles, a throaty V8, and enough space for us and plenty of kids. No wonder she likes it so much.
